The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, on Sunday, banned all masquerades in the ancient city from dancing in public.
The Oba in a statement made available to journalists through his Personal Assistant/Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Adeola Oloko, noted that he took the decision in view of the coronavirus pandemic that has been ravaging the world since December last year.
The monarch, while issuing the directive as this year’s Egungun (masquerades) festival gets underway this week, directed all masquerades-irrespective of grades to observe their rituals from their respective homes and pray for the speedy end to COVID-19.
According to him, the decision not to have a long procession this year is not unconnected with the new coronavirus pandemic and the need to observe rules associated with social distancing.
Adetunji stated that the energetic nature of the festival has made it imperative for all masquerades to stay at home and perform all necessary rites until the authorities state otherwise.
He added that the decision was reached after extensive consultation with the relevant authorities and stakeholders.
He advised all the people to wash their hands, use a facemask, and maintain social distancing at all times to curb the spread of the virus.
