UK prime minister ,Theresa May has said she will be stepping down as leader of her Conservative Party and then as Britain’s prime minister, after repeatedly failing to win Parliament’s approval for a deal to withdraw the country from the European Union.

In an emotional statement, she said she had done her best to deliver Brexit and it was a matter of “deep regret” that she had been unable to do so.

I feel as certain today as I did three years ago that in a democracy, if you give people a choice you have a duty to implement what they decide. I have done my best to do that,” she added. “I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal. Sadly, I have not been able to do so.”

Mrs May will stand down formally on June 7 and leave when successor is chosen.

She would continue to serve as PM while a Conservative leadership contest takes place.
