Joy Isi-Bewaji slams the educational system in Nigeria

Writer Joy Isi-Bewaji has slammed the educational system  in Nigeria, saying kids are being taught irrelevant subjects in school.

Bewaji did not stop there as she further slammed Nigerian youths who spend most of their time on social media instead of breaking boundaries like most of their peers in other parts of the world.

In her words;

What are they really teaching our children in school?

Let’s think about that for a minute.

Social Studies – a pile of information on social responsibility spread across nine academic terms. Basic stuff.

Then there’s Home Economics – how to lay a fucking table before dinner, and how to sew your knickers.

There’s Religious Studies. There’s tiny pieces of French language that triggers a “bonjour” and a few prepositions after studying for three years.

Some subjects are very important, of course, especially in science classes. But a lot of it in other classes should move with the changing times and the information manure that produces real results.

I think in secondary schools, they should have lessons on certain personal brands like Zuckerberg, and the story of Einstein. They should study the success of Jay Z, of P.Diddy. Then they should have classes on Warren Buffet. And that of Jack Ma, Alibaba website Chief Executive, who is the epitome of perseverance.

They should study CNN and Ted Turner vis-a-vis our constant failure to have a news station that can possibly wipe the floor that CNN steps on. Over 180 million people producing nothing, achieving very little… yet to so proud, so foul-mouhted, so empty, creating amebo groups and posts as their best invention.

We are not laying any real foundation for our children. We don’t know what success is because we spent all our years in school studying Home Economics, and how the head is for carrying water in some other subjects.

The real information is out there and nobody is teaching the next generation of teens how to be different from us.

Are you not even curious how P.Diddy gets so rich without singing or rapping for years? Don’t you think that information will do well in the hands of a growing generation and how they can apply it to fixing Nigeria’s stagnation?

What about China’s explosive development and interest in science? What about the magnificence of Dubai and how it moved from a desert to one of the most luxurious cities in the world? How about Japanese and cars? How about America and impeccable PR?

Shouldn’t we be teaching children what truly makes for greatness – the principles and the personalities behind some of the most profound inventions and impressive brands?

Can we teach our kids about Next newspaper in Nigeria and why it failed woefully?

What about NN24 and the one billion naira investment that went down the drain?

Can we teach them about HiTV and how not to run a satellite TV? Can we compare our perpetual failure to all the South African gigs making billions in Nigeria – Shoprite, DSTV et al?

If we don’t address real education, we will continue to recycle our failures.

Does it not baffle you how much time the average adult Nigerian has to gossip? We are so jobless, so unimaginative, so far away from what drives the world’s greatest stories and success, that we spend our adult time spreading shit stories, writing a mess about other people’s lives and getting high on it.

For a country that has absolutely nothing to offer or share with the rest of the world, it’s amazing how comfortable we are in our little spaces doing the most mundane activities and getting hailed for being “bad ass”, “correct gist”, “who get this sub” etc.

We are so removed from reality that our failure is ashamed of how comfortable we are wrapping it around our waists.

We are not taking care of the education of our children because we are here, on social media, trying to decide who we can drag through a gutter as response to our inner misery and failure and delusions.

We are so selfish. I think Nigerians are the most narcissistic people in the world.

Because it is insane to be so underdeveloped, so dirt poor, so trashy and corrupt as a people and yet be so bold and excited to be entertained by other people’s sex lives, marriages or mundane activities.

Eish.

There’s a 13 year old working in Google office in America.

Watch him speak about technology and bury your head in shame.

We are analysing people’s sex lives and whom they choose to sleep with…

Some white woman just had sex and she’s about to produce the biggest show of her life that may change the course of history.

But you are here, a hypocritical Nigerian, broke to your socks, your misery like tyres around your waist… And you spend all your time analysing the lives of others.

Are you not so fucking plebiean that you should just rather die?

Eish.

This is 2018. Your best response is success.

If we are too old to change, is there a way we can NOT let our children become like us?

I find half the subjects in school to be redundant. There’s no way we are going to build a first world country teaching half the crap being taught in school to our kids.

Our kids need to know what drives businesses like L’Oreal worth over $42 billion; Wal-Mart stores worth over $46 billion. What about Michael Bloomberg, how did he grow a company worth up to $50 billion? Amancio Ortega of Zara is worth $70 billion. By God!

What are we teaching our children? This is not just about making money, this is about purpose, drive, strategy, principles and other tough elements of greatness.

How can we still be teaching kids how to greet elders for an entire term in school?

Who cares? Give the elders a headbutt if you wish, just don’t be another commoner stuck in a society that achieves nothing and think it is ok as long as you are married.

Eish.

Doesn’t anyone get it?

We are useless. The world will not miss Nigeria if it were to go up in flames this minute. 180 million people, and our best products with access to education and internet, are busy analysing the sex organs of other people’s private lives.

You want to fuck? You want to join us in a threesome? Just say so. Get it over with.

You’re broke? We can pay for your session. Take off your fucking dross and your bra and fuck!

When you are done, sew up your vagina with a needle and thread. Your chastity or celibacy means nothing to world development.

Can’t you see?

Fuck if you want to. Just go out there and change this damn world.

*Ugh! I have a headache.”
