President Trump ,facing criticism for the White House’s handling of spousal abuse allegations against former aide Rob Porter , condemned domestic violence on Wednesday.
“I am totally opposed to domestic violence and everybody here knows that,” Trump said during a brief appearance in the Oval Office.
The President faced intensifying calls for him to personally speak about the allegations against Porter after he defended his ex-aide on Friday.
Trump had repeatedly declined opportunities to speak out on the matter. Instead, he lamented over the weekend that “peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation.”
He broke his silence on Wednesday.
“I am totally opposed to domestic violence of any kind. Everyone knows that and it almost wouldn’t even have to be said, so now you hear it, but you all know it,” he told reporters.
