Navy officials have issued an apology and are now launching a formal investigation after one of their aircrafts was involved in the creation of obscene skywriting spotted in Okanogan County, Wash., according to KREM 2.
The Navy issued a statement saying they “have grounded the aircrew and are conducting a thorough investigation.”
Navy officials say they will “hold those responsible accountable for their actions.”
The public caught wind of the incident after a local mother sent photos of what appears to be a rudimentary rendering of male genitalia scrawled in smoke amongst the clouds.
The woman feared that despite the graphic artwork’s lack of permanence, her children may see it and begin asking questions.
KREM 2 reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration about the incident.
They were told that unless the act poses a safety risk, there’s little to nothing they can do.An official with the FAA said they “cannot police morality.”
When first contacted about the incident, the Navy released a statement saying it “holds its aircrew to the highest standards and we find this absolutely unacceptable, of zero training value and we are holding the crew accountable.”
