An Alabama mother has now been charged with manslaughter, after the body of a dead newborn child was found in the trunk of her own vehicle.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
According to officials, on November 14th, 2017, 23-year-old Jalesa Gaines was stopped on Jackson, Alabama’s Highway 43 by the local police for an expired registration plate.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, halfway through the routine traffic stop, the young woman alleged that she was on her way to Walmart and became somewhat uncooperative, providing the authorities with a false name. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Immediately, the officers were then prompted to conduct a search of the vehicle, and they later discovered a lifeless infant wrapped up in, what appeared to be, a sweater that was placed inside of a shoebox.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Jackson Police Department confirmed to FOX10 that Gaines had actually just given birth to the baby boy on November 9th. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Reportedly, it is believed that the child was not stillborn, and he was alive at the time of birth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gaines was initially charged with abuse of a corpse, but a new arrest upgraded that charge to manslaughter. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death is still pending
