SpaceX founder Elon Musk has activated Starlink, his commercial internet network, in Ukraine, after Ukraine’s First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, tweeted at him, calling for help on Saturday, as Ukraine continues to fight off Russia.
According to Politico, Musk’s SpaceX has thousands of Starlink satellites in orbit, allowing the company to beam broadband services around Earth without fibre-optic cables.
The move by Musk is so that the satellites could keep Ukraine online if its internet infrastructure is damaged by Russia’s attacks.
Internet monitor NetBlocks said Ukraine had been experiencing “significant disruptions to internet service” since Thursday, when Russia launched military operations in the country.
