In Nigeria grasshoppers or Para are usually fried and eaten as food. These insects are mostly caught during the rainy season.
The grasshoppers are mostly caught in Maiduguri.
Traders make a serious profit selling grasshoppers. Do you know that according to the UN Food and Agricultural organization, grasshoppers is rich with protein, vitamins, fibre and minerals and it a cheaper option for protein compared to other meat?
We spoke to a trader who said that they normally get the grasshoppers from Maiduguri, and transport it to Kaduna. A beg (sack) is sold for 50 thousand. He disclosed that business is good, he makes 20 to 30 thousand daily selling it.
