Farmers in the country have warned that killings and attacks by terrorists and bandits are dangerous to national food security.
The president of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Kabiru Ibrahim, told Daily Trust yesterday that some farmers had abandoned their harvests for fear of attacks.
He said many farmers had lost their investments and means of livelihood.
He said the security situation in Nigeria seemed to have defied all solutions.
Reacting to the Saturday’s killings of farmers in Borno State, he said the trauma to everyone in Nigeria was immense, heartbreaking and very discouraging to his members.
“In the North-East, the situation is almost 11 years old and with no end in sight despite the efforts of the military.
“No farmer will readily go to the farm with this slaughter going on. The already fragile food system will be adversely affected by the development,” he said.
On the way forward, Kabir advised that the forests providing safe heaven to Boko Haram in the North East and the bandits in the North West be defoliated.
“In the North West, the situation is very similar to the North-East in that the bandits run through the forest from one end as they are chased by the military to the other, “ he said.
