President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Kamarudeen Usman for successfully defending his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title with an emphatic 50-45, 50-45, 49-46 win over Jorge Masvidal.

As the first African-born and Nigerian UFC Champion, President Buhari in a statement by his special adviser media, Femi Adesina commended the courageous fighter for finishing strong inside the octagon, proudly flying the green and white colors in distant lands and reminding the world that good things and great people will still come out of Nigeria.

“While the global COVID-19 pandemic may have brought gloom to many families and nations, the President is delighted and gratified that our welterweight champion has lifted our spirits with another professional performance, proving that things will surely get better at the fullness of time when we remain committed to our vision.”

The President wishes Usman the very best and more victories in his career and prays that like fine wine, he improves with age.

The victory over Masvidal means that Usman remains unbeaten in his UFC career so far as well as putting his level with Khabib Nurmagomedov with 12 consecutive wins.

A meeting with Gilbert Burns could still be on the cards after the Brazilian was forced to withdraw from his fight with Usman, six days before the event; having tested positive for coronavirus.

“First and foremost, I need to get home to my daughter,” said Usman. “That is what is important. I need to sit on my couch, eat some Thai food and watch some Netflix with her and then, watch a couple of gymnastics training and jiu-jitsu practices”.

“And then, we will start thinking about fighting somebody again. I mean, that is the one thing in this division. There is no shortage of contenders”.

“Leon Edwards is there. I mean, the guy has been tearing it up. Gilbert (Burns) had an amazing year. He is there. Colby (Covington) thinks he is there. So there is no shortage of challenges”.

“There is always going to be a challenger and they (UFC) are always going to throw somebody in there with me.”
