US President Donald Trump on Tuesday night gave his annual State of the Union speech to Congress on Capitol Hill where he discussed his achievements, plans for the new year and the upcoming US presidential elections.
The one hour and 20 minute speech, which happened hours before the Senate will likely vote to clear Trump of Impeachment trial charges, veered back and forth between bragging about the American economy and his killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, handing out awards and reuniting a military spouse with her husband, freshly home from Afghanistan.
Republicans could be seen during the speech cheering on Trump with chants of ‘four more years’ heard frequently while Democratic lawmakers wearing White got to their feet to shout down Donald Trump on healthcare during a vocal floor battle led by Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.
One of the many jaw-dropping moments of the night came when Trump introduced Amy Williams of Fort Brag, North Carolina, who was there with her two children and whose husband Sgt Townsend Williams was deployed in Afghanistan. Trump, in a stunning move, announced he was back from deployment, to which Amy shed tears of joy.
In another jaw dropping moment, Trump announced he will be presenting the Presidential Medal of Freedom, – the highest honor given to a civilian, to Rush Limbaugh, the TV/radio host who recently announced he had stage four cancer.
The address then ended in a sour/bitter note as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ripped apart her copy of President Trump’s State of the Union address after he finished speaking on Tuesday night.
