For only the third time in the 243-year history of the United States, the House of Representatives has voted to impeach the president.
Donald J. Trump is now the third president impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors while in office, and he is the first president to be impeached in his first term.
The first article of impeachment passed the House and charges Trump with criminal abuses of power, including bribing a foreign power, Ukraine, to interfere in the 2020 elections.
The second article, being voted on next, accuses Trump of obstructing Congress’s impeachment investigation by ordering his top aides not to testify and denying 71 document requests despite lawful subpoenas.
The decision on whether to acquit Trump or indict him and remove him from office now moves to the Senate, which will likely hold a trial in January. The power to impeach, though, lies solely with the House, per the U.S. Constitution.
Before Wednesday night’s vote, the House held 11 whopping hours of heated debate. During those hours, tensions ran high between the GOP and Democrat sides with members occasionally yelling at each other.
