Manchester United face a fight to land Bruno Fernandes, after Tottenham made their move to sign the Portuguese international, the UK Mirror reports.
Having hit a wall with Real Betis for Mauricio Pochettino’s No.1 transfer target, Giovani Lo Celso, Spurs have turned to Fernandes.
Fernandes, 24, has been heavily-linked with a move to Old Trafford.
The midfielder enjoyed a standout campaign in Lisbon last season, bagging 23 times from midfield for club and country
Spurs previously held talks with the player’s agent, Miguel Pinho, back in June.
Although United were favourites to land Fernandes, they have still not closed a deal. Indeed, despite talks, they are yet to table an offer.
Instead, they have been prioritising moves for Leicester defender Harry Maguire and, after coming on the market, Juventus forward Paulo Dybala.
With Sporting understood to want to hold on to Fernandes until after the Portuguese Super Cup against Benfica on Saturday, that was a situation which appeared to suit all parties – seemingly with United chiefs planning to close a deal next week.
But Tottenham’s arrival on the scene has complicated matters.
The North London club have now sent two senior officials to Lisbon to try and finalise a deal.
