An Iowa father tragically died while trying to save his children from a frozen lake after their car plummeted through the ice over the weekend.
Zackary Newlon, 40, was pronounced dead alongside his eight-year-old son, Blair.
Witnesses said the father struggled to save his son and two daughters, nine-year-old Sidney and five-year-old Sophie, after their family car smashed through the ice of Storm Lake around 5.40pm.
First responders rushed to the scene and worked to pull the family from the lake.
According to Buena Vista County Sheriff Kory Elston, rescue crews pulled the family from the ice by 6.23pm on Sunday evening .
‘By then, it’s dark with freezing conditions, so every second matters,’ Elston told the Des Moines Register. Â We were fortunate we had someone see the car be submerged, which allowed us to get to them as fast as we could.’
