A lion killed one person at the Conservators Center in Caswell County, North Carolina after escaping its enclosure on Sunday.

The victim has been identified as Alexandra Black, 22, of New Palestine, Indiana, the Associated Press reports.

Black was a college intern and had been employed at the Conservators Center for approximately two weeks.

The center confirmed the lion was later shot and killed.

“The Conservators Center is devastated by the loss of a human life today,” a representative for the Center confirmed in a statement. “While a husbandry team led by a professionally trained animal keeper was carrying out a routine enclosure cleaning, one of the lions somehow left a locked space and entered the space the humans were in and quickly killed one person.”
