Two students had a tragic end after drowning while taking selfies at a river. Sharlet Atieno and Derick Ouka Bondo both students of Technical Training Institute and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Kenya, visited Siaya town with two other friends.
They were there for a photo shoot on the banks of River Yala.
After applying traditional make-up and wrappers for the session,Atieno, a first-year student, posed for a photo on the rocks.
As Ouka, a second-year student tried to take the picture, Atieno slipped and fell into the river. Her friends initially thought it was a prank.
“We burst into laughter but that soon turned into panic when she failed to resurface,” Stephanie who was part of the group said.
Realising how dire the situation was, Ouka jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue her. However, he was overwhelmed by the current.
This was their second time of going to the river for photoshoots.
