Ex-Chief Justice of Nigeria dies in London

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Idris Kutigi, has died at the age of 78 in a London hospital on Sunday after a brief illness. His eldest son, Sani Kutigi confirmed his death to media personnels.

The younger Kutigi’s son confirmed the death of his father in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in Minna on Sunday.

He had said:

” We are making arrangements to transport our father back for burial.”

The Former Chief Justice who is now late, was born on Dec. 31, 1939.He also left behind 18 children and over 40 grandchildren.

Idris Kutigi served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from Jan. 30, 2007 until Dec. 30 2009.

He was also the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Niger State until the year 1976, when he was hence appointed as High Court judge.

Justice Kutigi served in that capacity for over a decade, after which he proceeded to later join the Supreme Court in 1992.

Ten years after serving at the Supreme Court, based on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, the former President Olusegun Obasanjo went on to appoint him to the position of Chief Justice as successor to Justice Salihu Alfa Belgore, who had retired on January 17, 2007.
