The Nigerian police have been ordered by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Jabi, Abuja, on Wednesday to stop its interrogation of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, over the Offa bank robbery. This is to be so pending the determination of a fundamental rights suit brought against the FG.
Justice M. A. Nasir gave the restraining order while ruling on an exparte motion brought by 10 lawyers led by the National Chairman of APP party, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, seeking the enforcement of the fundamental human rights of Saraki.
In the suit, the plaintiffs asked the court to among others, restrained the Police from interrogating, harassing, inviting, arresting, detaining or taking any action that would infringed on the fundamental rights of the Senate president pending the hearing and determination of the substantive Matter.
Over 30 people were killed in the robbery of banks in Offa, Kwara State, earlier in the year. Saraki has been invited several times for questioning by the police since the April 5 robbery in Kwara State.
According to the police, information provided by some arrested suspects indicted Saraki, resulting in a need for the senate president to explain his role in the fatal robbery.
Following the failure of the senate president to honour the invitation, the police issued another statement asking Mr Saraki to make himself available or be arrested.
