With his three goals against Haiti in Argentina’s World Cup warm-up match, Lionel Messi took his tally to 64 goals for his country.

It’s a mark which sees him overtake Ronaldo Nazario, El Fenomeno, in international goals. The Brazil legend scored 63 during his career,Sports English reports.

Messi, therefore, is now the second top scorer in the history of South America. The only person still ahead of him is Pele, who scored 77, 13 more than him.

With the World Cup un Russia around the corner, Messi may well cut that gap on the former Brazil striker over the coming month.

And, at the age of 30, he still has time to score the goals which would see him become the top scorer for any South American national team.

This season, Messi was the top scorer in all European club competitions, ending the campaign with 45, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Salah.
