BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 03: Malala Yousafzai opens the new Library of Birmingham at Centenary Square on September 3, 2013 in Birmingham, England. The new futuristic building was officially opened by 16-year-old Malala Yousafzai who was attacked by Taliban gunmen on her school bus near her former home in Pakistan in October 2012. The new building was designed by architect Francine Hoube and has cost 189 million GBP. The modern exterior of interlacing rings reflects the canals and tunnels of Birmingham. The library's ten floors will house the city's internationally significant collections of archives, photography and rare books as well as it's lending library. Campaigner Malala Yousafzai has reportedly gone back to Pakistan for the first time since she was shot in the head fighting for education for girls.

Malala was the victim of an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012 while riding the bus to school.

She had been targeted for her efforts to promote education for girls in Pakistan – including writing a blog about her life under Taliban occupation for the BBC when she was just 11-years-old.

Reports in local media suggest the 20-year-old arrived at Islamabad’s international airport in the early hours of this morning.

Pakistani television channel Geo TV aired footage claiming to show Malala – now an Oxford University student – leaving Benazir Bhutto International Airport and getting into a car escorted by a security convoy.

It is reported that she will meet with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi during her stay. Malala was just 15 when she was targeted by the terrorist group for her fearless campaigning.

She was flown to England in the days following the attack, and treated at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Fearing reprisals in her native country, her and her family decided to make the city their home. In 2014 she became the youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
