Toys ‘R’ Us founder Charles Lazarus dies as company crumbles

The founder of Toys “R” Us died Thursday as the company planned to liquidate its inventory and close all of its U.S. stores.

Charles Lazarus died at 94 Thursday morning, according to a Toys “R” Us spokesperson.

“There have been many sad moments for Toys ‘R’ Us in recent weeks, and none more heartbreaking than today’s news about the passing of our beloved founder, Charles Lazarus,” read a statement from the company.

The news comes a week after Toys “R” Us announced it would conduct “an orderly wind-down of its U.S. business” and liquidate inventory in all 735 of its U.S. stores.
