Lupita Nyong’o and Kumail Nanjiani have used their immigrant status to make one well-thought out dig at President Donald Trump.
‘We are the two actors you keep hearing about but whose name’s you can’t pronounce,’ began Lupita.
‘Well, I have to come clean,’ added Kumail. ‘Kumail Nanjiani is my stage name. My actual given Pakistani name is Chris Pine, so you can imagine how annoyed I was when the white Chris Pine showed up.’
But the pair had a more serious point to add, aside from the jokes.
‘We are also immigrants, I am from Kenya,’ said Lupita, ‘… and like everyone in this room and everyone watching at home we are dreamers, we grew up one day dreaming of working in the movies. Dreams are the foundation of Hollywood, and the foundation of America. So to all the dreamers out there we stand with you.’
Dreamers is the name give to young people living in the US whose family brought them to the U.S. illegally as children, or whose parents overstayed visas.
DACA – the Obama approved program to protect Dreamers – has been under threat since the inauguration of President Donald Trump, although in recent weeks he has softened his stance on the deportation of those young people.
