A North Dakota woman sentenced to life behind bars for murdering her pregnant neighbor so that she could keep the baby admitted she cut the infant out of the 22-year-old woman while she was still alive.

A judge on Friday handed Brooke Crews the life sentence without possibility for parole during a hearing that for the first time detailed the grisly death of Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind, of Fargo,NY Daily News reports.

Crews in August lured her downstairs neighbor into her apartment by requesting her help with a sewing project. Prosecutors said the pair argued and that Crews pushed LaFontaine-Greywind to ground, knocking her unconscious.

Then, using either a “utility knife or a blade,” Crews cut into LaFontaine-Greywind as she faded in and out of consciousness and removed the infant from her womb. The young mother eventually bled to death, prosecutors said.

Crews’ 32-year-old boyfriend, William Hoehn, told police he came home the night of August 19 to his girlfriend cleaning up blood in their bathroom.

“This is our baby,” she told him. “This is our family.”

Authorities found the newborn in the couple’s apartment and kayakers later discovered the body of LaFontaine-Greywind wrapped in plastic in a river.

Ashton Matheny, the baby’s father, said learning how his child was born and how his girlfriend died “tore him apart.” He attended the Friday hearing with his baby girl, who he named Haisley Jo.

LaFontaine-Greywind’s mother, Norberta Greywind, also addressed the court, explaining how their family had to move from Fargo following the brutal slaying.
