A 27-year-old man, Emeka Cyril, who allegedly stole an eight-month-old baby from a shop, was on Monday remanded in prison on the orders of a Lagos Court.
Cyril had appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on a charge of stealing a baby.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias, while remanding the accused, adjourned the case until Feb. 7 for further hearing and ruling on his bail application.
Earlier, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, the Police Prosecutor, insisted that the accused had committed the offence on Jan. 19 at 2.00 p.m. at Alhaji Street in Ikorodu, Lagos.
She said Cyril had hidden himself at the back of Mrs Orji’s shop, the mother of the eight-month-old child, and had quietly stretched his hands through an open space to steal the boy.
The offences, she noted, contravened Section 277 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The section provides 14 years imprisonment for offenders.
