U.K finally leaves European Union after 47 years

The United Kingdom has officially left European Union, after 47 years of membership. The UK departed the EU at 23:00 GMT – midnight in Brussels.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for the nation to come together as he hailed a “new dawn” for the UK.

In Brussels, the British flag was removed from its pole outside the European Parliament and replaced with the flag of the European Union.

A clock counting down to the moment the UK leaves the EU was projected on to Downing Street.

Anti-Brexit campaigners staged a march past Downing Street as EU supporters held a celebration rally in nearby Parliament Square.

UK citizens, however, will notice few immediate changes. Most EU laws will continue to be in force – including the free movement of people – until 31 December, when the transition period comes to an end.
