Politician accused of plotting to kill Venezuela’s president falls to his death

A Venezuelan opposition politician arrested on suspicion of involvement in a failed assassination attempt on President Nicolas Maduro has died after falling from the tenth floor of the headquarters of the country’s intelligence service.

Government officials claim Fernando Alban killed himself by jumping from the tower-block in central Caracas, but his supporters claim intelligence officers murdered him.

The United Nations have today said it will investigate the 56-year-old councilman’s mysterious death death last Friday,Mailonline reports.

Alban was taken into custody Friday at Caracas’ international airport upon arriving from New York, according to his lawyer.

He was in the U.S. accompanying other members of his First Justice party for meetings with foreign dignitaries attending the United Nations General Assembly.
